On December 7, Palestinian poet Refaat Alareer was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza City along with his brother, sister and her four children.

The full poem reads:
If I Must Die

If I must die,
you must live
to tell my story
to sell my things
to buy a piece of cloth
and some strings,
(make it white with a long tail)
so that a child, somewhere in Gaza
while looking heaven in the eye
awaiting his dad who left in a blaze —
and bid no one farewell
not even to his flesh
not even to himself —
sees the kite, my kite you made, flying up above,
and thinks for a moment an angel is there
bringing back love.
If I must die
let it bring hope,

Decolonization is NOT a metaphor.

“Decolonization brings with it the repatriation of Indigenous life and land. It is not a metaphor of other things we want to do to advance our societies….Turning decolonization into a metaphor allows for a series of evasions, or “settlers’ moves to innocence”, which problematically attempt to reconcile settler’s guilt and complicity, thus rescuing settler’s futurity. This article analyzes varied settlers’ moves to innocence in order to foster “an ethics of incommensurability”, acknowledging what is different and sovereign for decolonization projects as related to social justice projects based on human and citizen’s rights.”
